IN THIS LESSON
What’s Really Going On?
Jesus is preparing His disciples for His departure. He assures them that their love will be proven by obedience, and promises the Holy Spirit (Ruach ha-Kodesh) as their Comforter, Advocate, and Teacher. He leaves them His shalom (peace) and reminds them that what is coming has a purpose—so they may believe and walk in unity with the Father and the Son.
Jesus says: “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (v.15).
Jesus assures: “I will not leave you as orphans” (v.18).
Jesus closes with, “Let’s go from here!”—a call to move forward with faith and purpose.
What Was Said or Done?
He promises the Spirit of truth who will dwell within the believer (v.16–17).
He declares His return to the Father and leaves His peace, not like the world gives (v.27).
Judah (not Iscariot) asks about Jesus revealing Himself only to them, and Jesus responds that love and obedience invite God’s presence (v.22–23).
Let’s Talk About It
Let’s Talk About It
FEAR & CONFUSED
Decisions They Faced
The disciples had to choose to trust Jesus’s promise or remain fearful and confused.
FAITH
Judah questioned why Jesus wouldn’t reveal Himself to the world—this shows the choice between understanding Jesus through love and obedience, versus expecting Him to act according to human logic.
Jesus chose to obey the Father to the end, even though He knew “the ruler of this world” was coming.
What Happened Next?
Jesus made it clear that the Helper (Holy Spirit) would come and teach, comfort, and remind them of truth—a lifelong presence in the lives of believers.
The disciples received shalom (peace) that transcends circumstances.
The world would not understand this peace or this Spirit—but believers would be marked by God’s presence within them.
Jesus's obedience to the Father reveals His love in action, modeling for His followers how to live with courage, peace, and faithfulness.
Living It Out
Living It Out
💬 Let’s Make It Personal
In what areas of your life is Jesus inviting you to respond with obedience as a sign of love?
How have you experienced the Holy Spirit as your Helper or Advocate?
What situations try to steal your peace? How does Jesus’s peace speak into those moments?
When you feel abandoned or overwhelmed, how can you hold onto the truth: “I will not leave you as orphans”?
Your Next Step
Daily Practice: Before you start your day, invite the Holy Spirit to be your Helper and Counselor.
“Holy Spirit, teach me today. Remind me what Jesus has said. Be near.”
Reflection Challenge: Write out John 14:27 and place it somewhere visible. When fear or chaos strikes, declare:
“Jesus, Your peace is mine. I will not let my heart be troubled.”
Act of Obedience: Identify one command of Jesus that you want to live out today (e.g., forgiveness, generosity, love, prayer). Commit to practicing it as a response of love.
